Basel Cathedral

Basel Cathedral

For centuries, the appearance of the city of Basel has been shaped by the cathedral with its two medieval towers. This is due to a large extent to its prominent position on the Cathedral Hill of Grossbasel (Greater Basel). High above the banks of the Rhine, on the ‘Pfalz’, a built-up terrace supported by a massive wall, the most important church in Basel towers over the city.

«The present-day exterior of the cathedral gives little indication that it is in fact one of the most important and beautiful 12th-century churches on the Rhine. The 14th-century side chapels and in particular the 15th-century towers lend the exterior a Gothic character. However on entering, to our great surprise, we find ourselves in a still almost purely Romanesque interior, of a dimension that the simple exterior would hardly lead us to suspect.»
