Königsfelden Abbey

Königsfelden Abbey

Königsfelden Abbey was founded to commemorate the death of the German King Albrecht I, on a site not far from the scene of his murder on 1 May 1308. The King’s widow, Queen Elisabeth of Görz-Tirol, and their children here established and richly endowed a double monastery of Franciscan monks and nuns, which developed throughout the first half of the 14th century into an important Habsburg memorial site. The standing of the abbey was reflected in the furnishings and fittings of the church, of which the outstanding ensemble of stained-glass windows dating from 1314 to 1360 has survived to this day. Following the conquest of Aargau in 1415, Königsfelden came under Bernese rule, then in 1528 the Reformation led to the dissolution of the abbey. Königsfelden subsequently remained the seat of Bernese bailiffs until the end of the Ancien Régime in the 18th century.
