The Amphitheatre in Vindonissa Windisch-Brugg

The Amphitheatre in Vindonissa Windisch-Brugg

The amphitheatre in Vindonissa is one of the most important Roman sites in Switzerland. Being the largest and oldest amphitheatre on Swiss soil, it plays a key role in understanding similar edifices in Avenches, Augst, Martigny and Nyon in terms of their architecture and cultural history. In order to save the amphitheatre in Vindonissa from destruction, the Federal Government purchased and listed it in 1898. Based on its outstanding importance, the monument is considered a cultural monument of national importance, encompassing not only Roman ruins but also more than 100 years of excavation and restoration history.
